Abstract:

To reduce CO2 emission from fossil energy and alleviate global warming, targets in most countries are very ambitious with 100% renewable energy in 2050. As the pioneer in renewable energies, wind energy is developing very fast in the world. This means there will be important installations of both onshore and offshore wind turbines in the near future. The challenges of wind energy include both lowering costs of wind-generated energy and ensuring a high degree of social acceptance, where the noise aspect is of major importance in particular for onshore turbines. To improve the cost of energy, the size of wind turbines, which directly affects the noise signature, is constantly growing. Consequently, scientific advancements are needed for developing advanced technology to design new wind turbines and new wind farms.Achieving these objectives will allow for more efficient wind energy production, while at the same time lowering noise emission by gaining fundamental insight into the complex interaction between atmospheric turbulence, wake affected inflow, wind turbines and terrain. This lecture aims at giving the state of the art in the related research areas and describing the future scientific needs for such developments in the goal of developing environment friendly wind energy.
